Antlers Liquor and Wine Cellar, the Colorado Licensed Beverage Association, and independent retail stores across our state are asking you as a Colorado resident to help ensure the safe and responsible sale of alcohol products in your community. If keeping these decisions at the local level is important to you, please stop by our store and sign our petition. We need your support to get this initiative to the ballot this fall.

It would be easy to perceive that the cost of liquor and wine will drop should it be sold in large chain stores. This is not necessarily true. Here at Antlers, we never price gouge our customers. We price our products reasonably based on our cost. We also have the capability to carry a wide variety of your favorite locally produced liquor, beer, and wine. Chain stores are unlikely to carry this same variety of these local products, thus negatively affecting other local small businesses such as craft breweries, wineries, and vineyards as well as the locally owned distributors of these products.

Chain conglomerates care about only one thing—the bottom line, and that means profits for their shareholders. We care about your shopping experience, including the expertise to assist with your selections based on your desired spending limits, as well as the safety and security of our community. Chain stores with self-checkouts are unlikely to provide the same level of identification scrutiny as we do by personal contact with each customer, ensuring that adult beverages are not served to minors or those already under the influence of alcohol.

Local Control Initiative #135
Sponsored by the Colorado Licensed Beverage Association (CLBA) and liquor and wine sales stores across Colorado.

Our neighbors deserve to know when changes in liquor sales are coming to our area -AND- have a chance to be heard whether they are in favor of or oppose it. It is both your right and duty to be aware of any potential changes and voice your opinion prior to changes in the law.

Ballot Initiative #135 proposes the following:

1. Public Hearings:

  1. Expanded Liquor Licenses - When liquor licenses are expanded to allow different kinds of alcoholic beverages to be sold from a retail location (i.e. wine in grocery stores).
  2. Renewed Liquor Licenses - When liquor licenses are renewed. (i.e. annually - to ensure that the company seeking the renewal has a good track record of liquor law compliance and honesty)

The public deserves a process that is truly transparent.

2. 1/4 Mile Buffer:

  1. No facility is less than 1/4 mile away from any other one - Communities aren’t well served when there are too few -or- too many licensed stores to sell regulated products like alcohol. This is required by current law, and it is proven to be a reasonable distance to ensure that licensed locations are not on top of each other or dominating any one neighborhood.
  2. Safe, reasonable distance from Day Care Centers, Schools, and Churches, among other facilities.

Our neighbors deserve to know that their key community institutions aren’t surrounded on ALL sides by stores selling alcohol.

The petition is available at Antlers for your signature. Thank you for your time and consideration.
